CAPITALISING SOCIAL RESOURCES

A Framework of Approaching Student’s Needs

Department of Geography,

Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna.

Capitalizing Social Resources is a conceptual framework of approaching student’s needs that the department of geography has initiated this framework to ensure inclusive and equitable quality of education of our students. With the result of the recent interviews of the students of our department, we found that many students have been experiencing high cost of living that hinder their concentration on the studies. Hence the department took its all efforts collectively with our department alumni and stakeholders to find available resources in the society to meet the challenges of our students. As a part of this effort, the department has sought free accommodation facilities for 08 students at the starting level. A Urumpirai based Sri Lankan-Australian family (Mr. V.  Kandasamy and Mrs. K. Southamany) has come forward and offered these facilities with the following:

  • Free Accommodation
  • Free electricity bill
  • Free computer facility
  • Free cooking facilities (Gas cylinder, cooking utensils)

This facility will be coordinated by Mr. K. Kanageswaran, District Secretary (Acting), Mullaitivu District and administered by Mrs. Revathy Balendra, Secretary Gnanavairavar Foundation, Urumpirai. Eight students have been selected among the applications and the awarding event was held on 21 June, 2023 at the Department of Geography, University of Jaffna.
