Inter-Departmental Joint Field Survey

Partnering Institutions:

Department of Geography, Philipps-Marburg University, Germany
Department of Geography, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

Professor Markus Hassler and a group of 30 Geography undergraduate students are coming to the Geography Department, University of Jaffna to conduct a field survey in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka relating to Rural Development. Our second year special students from Geography and Community and Regional Planning and staff are joining this survey.

Field Survey Period:

02nd March to 5th March, 2022

Study Issues:

Resettlement, Agriculture, Fishing, Water issues, Vulnerability Assessment and Livelihood.

March 02, 2022, Wednesday (University Visit)

Vice Chancellor meeting, Department Visit, Student Interaction, Presentation by Prof. Markus, Documentary Presentation on PROFILE OF NORTHERN PROVINCE prepared by the students, University Tour, City Walk.

March 03, 2022 Thursday (Valikamam North DS Division Visit)

 Participating Students: 75 Students from both the universities

Facilitators: Prof. Markus, Dr. A.S. Soosai, Mrs. V. Pratheepa, Mr. S. Kabilan, Mr. S. Thanushan

Survey Area: Myliddy, Thaiyiddy GN Divisions

Focused Subjects:

  • Resettlement (IDP’s and Indian Refugee returnees)
  • Fisheries Community Issues (Livelihood, poverty and Indian-Local fisherman conflicts)
  • Agricultural Pattern

March 04, 2022 Friday (Mullativu and Kilinochchi Districts)

 Participating Students: 75 Students from both the Universities

Study Area: Pannankandy, Mallavi, Vellankulam, Pallikudah

  • Water related Issues (Flooding, Livelihood, Drought Vulnerability)
  • Agriculture (Problems and Challenges)
  • Land Issues
  • Civil war affected community Issues (Disability, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, female-headed family issues)

  • Fisheries issue, Employment and Women Development
  • Land Issues
  • Education and Health

 Outcome of this joint fieldwork:

  • Improving collaborative teamwork and interaction among the German and local students
  • Understanding and sharing social, cultural, and economical aspects and values and learning experiences.
  • Developing communicative, leadership and organizational skills among the students
  • Enhancing staff-student interrelationship between both the universities that would beneficial for further future joint works.
